"We cheat with statistics, we are investigating simpler crimes instead of complex crimes, because we do not have time to reach our target otherwise. So at the end of the month we get a desperate plea from our superiors, where they ask us to be kind and investigate the more simpler crimes," Tomas Bergström, a police investigator, has told SR.
Residential burglaries are then put on the side for the benefit of such crimes as petty theft and drug offences.
Researcher Stefan Holgersson at Linköping University has interviewed police investigators from all the 21 county police districts.
"There are even superiors who say ‘you should not get involved in the cases, you should not bother yourself, do not think with your heart’” Holgersson said to SR.
