Very low temperatures - and it might get colder (updated)

There are extremely low temperatures in most parts of Sweden at the moment and it will get even colder.

In Stockholm the temperatures went down to minus twenty today. The coldest temperature in the country was measured at Hemavan Airport outside Storuman in north Sweden. They had minus 38.8 centigrade. Uppsala Airport, much closer to Stockholm, had minus 32.6 according to SvD.

During Thursday and Friday the temperatures is believed to drop even further In Stockholm and in great parts of central Sweden. On Saturday it might get slightly warmer and then colder again next week even though prognosis that many days ahead are quite uncertain.

The cold weather has created power failures on some places. According to the daily newspaper Expressen; parts of Stockholm and the province of Dalsland in west Sweden are worst affected. In Dalarö and Ornö east of Stockholm, 3000 households were without electricity yesterday. Some of them for almost six hours.

The coldness also increases the risk for other types of accidents. One elderly man has gotten lost with his car outside Gislaved in south Sweden. It is snowing heavily and the mobile connection in the area is broken. The police are still searching for him.

In the very south of Sweden, in the province of Skåne and on the island Öland, it is much warmer; around zero and locally even a couple of degrees above zero.
 

Update: The elderly man who was missing outside of Gislaved was found alive during the evening. The man was sitting in his cold car that was stuck in the snow. It was ten degrees below zero and he has been taken to hospital.
