Investigator criticises ´moral courage law´

Sweden | 2011-03-11
Sweden should avoid creating a proposed law which would make it illegal to not interfere when someone is in trouble. This is the conclusion made by Olle Abrahmsson, a state appointed investigator today.

It has been called 'a moral courage law'. According to the idea, it would be illegal to be passive when a crime is committed or when someone is in danger in some way; provided it would not create a dangerous situation for the observer to intervene.

Abrahamsson have many different arguments why this idea should never be realized. Firstly most people do intervene also without a law and those who don't will not do it anyway.

-I do not think this law would have any effect. In an emergency situation people don't ask themselves what the law says, they act spontaneously says Olle Abrahmsson to Swedish radio.

Another reason not to introduce this law, writes Abramsson, is that it would make it more difficult for people to become witnesses if they committed a crime themselves by not taking action.

The Christian democrats, one of the parties in government, will not give up the idea despite the opinion of the one person commission. The report from Abrahmsson will now be sent to relevent persons and institutions for their opinion.
